Anthropic released Cowork, a new AI agent capability that extends the power of its Claude Code tool to non-technical users. The company built Cowork in approximately one week and a half, largely using Claude Code itself. This marks a major inflection point in the race to deliver practical AI agents to mainstream users.
Cowork allows users to complete non-technical tasks similar to how developers use Claude Code. It is available as a research preview exclusively to Claude Max subscribers through the macOS desktop application. The feature integrates with Anthropic's existing ecosystem of connectors and can pair with Claude in Chrome to execute tasks requiring web access.
Anthropic has warned users that its own AI agent could delete their files, highlighting the potential risks associated with an AI that can organize and modify local files. Despite these concerns, Cowork is seen as a significant step towards making AI agents more accessible and user-friendly for non-technical audiences. The launch of Cowork places Anthropic in direct competition with Microsoft's Copilot AI, but Anthropic's bottom-up evolution approach may give its product an advantage.
For now, Cowork remains exclusive to Claude Max subscribers using the macOS desktop application, but the company has signaled clear intentions to expand the feature's reach.
