Apple CEO Tim Cook will step down on September 1, handing over leadership to Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus. Cook has led the company since 2011, succeeding Steve Jobs, and leaves behind a $4 trillion business with annual revenue that has quadrupled under his watch. Cook will remain as executive chairman.
Ternus, who has spent nearly his entire career at Apple, was promoted to senior vice president in 2021 and has played a key role in the development of many Apple products, including iPhones, Macs, and AirPods. He has also focused on making Apple's products more durable and environmentally friendly.
The transition has been expected for some time, and Cook's leadership is widely credited with turning Apple Services into a $100 billion annual business and creating the wearables category at Apple. Ternus will join Apple's board of directors and lead the company with the values and vision that have defined it for half a century, according to Cook.
