Basata, a startup founded two years ago in Phoenix, is tackling the administrative burden on specialty medical practices. The problem: processing referrals from primary care doctors can take weeks or even months, causing patients to fall through the cracks. Basata's system uses AI to quickly read and process referral documents, extract relevant information, and schedule appointments directly with patients. This approach has been successful in cardiology and urology, and the company has processed around 500,000 patient referrals to date.
Basata's founders, Kaled Alhanafi and Chetan Patel, drew from their own experiences navigating the healthcare system to create the solution. The company has raised $24.5 million, including a new $21 million Series A round led by Lan Xuezhao of Basis Set Ventures. Basata plans to continue expanding into new specialties and has stated that its revenue model is usage-based.
The market for automating administrative tasks in healthcare is growing crowded, with Tennr and Assort Health also working on similar solutions. However, Basata's founders argue that their end-to-end workflow tailored to specific specialties sets them apart from competitors. The company says it has already seen a significant increase in word-of-mouth referrals, suggesting that its solution resonates with the medical community.
